Our History

Workers at Pint FillerPierre’s Ice Cream shop opened its doors in 1932, at a chic East 82nd Street and Euclid Avenue location in Cleveland, Ohio. Its gourmet ice creams were prepared fresh each day in the back of the store and sold by the cone, the cup, or hand packed for take home. Company founder, Alexander “Pierre” Basset, dreamed of marketing a “premium ice cream” which would be unsurpassed. Thus the name Pierre’s … and the creamy, indulgent recipe that is still used today.

Popularity for Pierre’s delicious products grew rapidly. The little shop quickly began cranking out its specialty ice creams for restaurants, country clubs and gourmet markets.

Pumpkin PintIt didn’t take long for Pierre’s to outgrow its small space on Euclid Avenue. Through the years, Pierre’s made numerous expansions and relocations, each time into larger, more efficient manufacturing facilities. With each move, Pierre’s always stayed within three miles of its original location … right in the heart of Cleveland, Ohio.

Pierre’s moved into its current distribution center and office headquarters at East 65th Street and Euclid Avenue in 1995, just one mile west of its original shop.

In 2011, Pierre’s opened a brand new, 35,000-square-foot ice cream factory containing state-of-the-art technology and efficiencies, along with enhanced food-safety and food-quality features.

These facility investments, along with Pierre’s eye-catching fleet of special, low-temperature trucks, provided a platform to service retailers and distributors across the country with high quality products and world-class service.

As an anchor company in the heart of MidTown Cleveland, Pierre’s demonstrated a bold commitment to the community in the early 1990s by remaining and reinvesting in the neighborhood.

Pierres French Vanilla Premium Ice CreamOne of the first ice cream producers in the country to achieve SQF Level 3 certification – the industry’s highest achievable level of food safety and food quality – Pierre’s is poised to continue contributing and innovating in the food industry.

Looking back, the first product that Pierre’s produced was its pint.  French Vanilla, Swiss Chocolate and Strawberry comprised the entire assortment and were sold throughout local grocery stores.

An updated version of the original package design is still used today to remind consumers that Pierre’s is dedicated to upholding the high-quality recipes developed at the original ice cream shop. Pierre’s assortment of products has grown through the years. Presently there are over 235 different products and flavors that bear the Pierre’s name. This dedication influences the company’s focus on the future as it develops new opportunities and continues to be innovative and sensitive to ice cream lovers’ ever-changing needs and new trends.

Straight Truck 2013In recognition of the company’s outstanding performance as a supplier and corporate citizen, Pierre’s has been honored with numerous awards. The company engages in important community works within the region, especially education as demonstrated by its involvement with the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation, and Pierre’s participation in economic development.  Pierre’s supports other causes through participation in charity events, partnership with Vocational Guidance Services, support of local area food banks and contributions toward sustainability.

We strive to exceed our customers’ expectations by providing the very best products and services, and by working to create a challenging and rewarding environment for our employees, while encouraging growth and learning for all.

If it says “Pierre’s”, you can be sure you will experience 100% total satisfaction in every spoonful!

Pierre’s Coconut Pineapple Angel Food Layer Cake

Coconut Pineapple Angle Food Layer Cake Cropped FinalPierre’s Premium Coconut Pineapple Ice Cream combines delicious coconut pieces and juicy chunks of pineapple for a delightful tropical treat!

For a simple dessert idea, try this refreshing recipe with family and friends:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1.5 Quart container of Pierre’s Premium Coconut Pineapple Ice Cream
  • 1 Angel Food Cake
  • 1 Tub Fluffy White Frosting
  • 1 Can Pineapple Tidbits
  • 1 Cup Shaved Coconut
  • Jellybeans
  • Colored Sugar Sprinkles

Remove ice cream from freezer and let it soften at room temperature for about 5-10 minutes. Do not thaw ice cream for too long or else it will crystallize when refrozen.

Chocolate Covered Strawberry Ice Cream Brownie Bars Recipe

Hand-dipped strawberries are a classic Valentine’s Day treat, but you can enjoy our seasonal Pierre’s Premium Chocolate Covered Strawberry Ice Cream flavor through May. Still, there’s just something so romantic about that decadent pairing of rich chocolate and strawberries, we couldn’t help but put some thought – and some love – into this easy-to-make Valentine-themed dessert idea.Chocolate Covered Strawberry Premium Ice Cream

This layered dessert is elegant enough for a dinner party but so simple to make you might keep a pan of it in your freezer at all times.

Ingredients:

  • Your favorite brownie mix (enough for two 8” square pans or one 9” x 13” pan)
  • 1 1.5 quart container of Pierre’s Premium Chocolate Covered Strawberry Ice Cream
  • Light or nonfat whipped topping
  • Strawberry sundae topping
  • Chocolate syrup

Prepare brownies as directed; let cool. Remove ice cream from freezer for 20 minutes so it’s easier to work with. Spread ice cream on top of the brownie layer until just below the top of the pan and freeze for at least an hour.

Remove pan from freezer and spread a layer of strawberry sundae topping on top of the ice cream. Then, cover with whipped topping. Freeze until it’s time to serve. Cut into squares, plate and drizzle with chocolate syrup.

Chocolate Peppermint Stick Ice Cream Pie Recipe

Need to feed a crowd this holiday season? This easy-to-make recipe yields two rich and creamy pies using our Peppermint Stick Ice Cream and our classic Chocolate Ice Cream. This is what we call “season’s eatings!”Peppermint Stick Premium Ice Cream

Ingredients:

Chocolate Premium Ice CreamFreeze crusts for at least 30 minutes to firm them up before filling. (This way, the crumbs will stay in place and not mix with the ice cream.)

Slightly soften the ice cream in the refrigerator before scooping (about 10 – 20 minutes).

Place 4 scoops of Peppermint Stick Ice Cream into a bowl. Whip with rubber spatula to make spreadable; spread into each pie crust. Return crusts to freezer for 10 minutes.

Repeat process for Chocolate Ice Cream layer and a top layer of Peppermint Stick Ice Cream in each pie. Cover with plastic wrap when storing.

Before serving, allow pies to soften for five minutes at room temperature for best flavor and texture. Top each pie with whipped cream and sprinkle with mini chocolate chips or holiday chips before slicing. Enjoy!

*Note: Don’t let the ice cream melt while preparing the pie as it may become icy when it refreezes.

5 Ice Cream Pairings for Pumpkin Pie

Thanksgiving is a time of year when we reflect on what matters most: family, friends, health and happiness. We’d be lying, however, if we didn’t tell you that we daydream about pumpkin pie the weeks (and days and hours and minutes…) leading up to Turkey Day.Pumpkin Pie

Who doesn’t? There’s just something about the creamy richness of a home baked pumpkin pie. It’s delicious on its own, of course, but we prefer it à la mode (hard to believe, we know).

Here are five ice cream flavors to partner with your pumpkin pie this year:

French Vanilla Ice Cream

Pierre’s award-winning French Vanilla Ice Cream, with its rich vanilla flavor, is a wonderful match for spicy pumpkin pie. The fact that we only use the world’s finest vanilla extracts means you’ll be serving up a Thanksgiving dessert of global proportions.

Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

Our Vanilla Bean Ice Cream is anything but, well, vanilla. In fact, in every scoop you see specks of real vanilla beans! Choose this flavor to enjoy a new spin on classic vanilla à la mode.

Yovation® Probiotic Frozen Yogurt

For a better-for-you way to garnish your pumpkin pie, choose Yovation® Probiotic Frozen Yogurt®. Yovation® contains live and active yogurt cultures that provide all the goodness and benefits of yogurt and a superior probiotic culture. With less fat than regular ice cream, Yovation® is a delicious and satisfying treat.

Although there is a tasty Vanilla Yovation® Probiotic Frozen Yogurt, may we suggest placing a perfect portion of Butter Pecan atop your pumpkin pie instead? The fresh-roasted pecans and rich flavor make for a great alternative to vanilla.

Cinnamon Ice Cream

While we’re on the subject of substituting other flavors for vanilla, you might want to spice up you’re à la mode game with Cinnamon Ice Cream – one of our limited edition flavors that, like the holidays, will be gone before you know it. Stock up on a couple of cartons and try it with apple pie, pumpkin roll and spice cake, too.

Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream

Can’t get enough pumpkin? Then our Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream is for you. This flavor tastes so much like the real thing, you could skip baking a pie this year altogether. What a refreshing way to cap off your Thanksgiving celebration!

Clambake Recipes: Perfect Desserts for Fall Gathering

Clambakes are the quintessential autumn event. Although the tradition started in New England, it has spread across the country as home chefs and restaurant staff alike prepare menus of seafood boils, roast chicken, steamed clams, grilled steaks, lobster tails and other savory delights.

But no dinner party is complete without a delicious dessert. Here are five ideas for the final course of your fall clambake:

Waffle Bowl Apple “Dumplings”Cinnamon Premium Ice Cream

Apple dumplings are a pleasure to eat, but time-consuming (and messy!) to prepare. Instead of covering your kitchen counter with flour to create and roll yards of crust, try this quick sundae creation instead. Place scoops of Cinnamon Ice Cream in waffle cone bowls (which you’ll find in the baking aisle or near the ice cream section of your grocery store) and top with fresh, cooked apples and cinnamon or warmed apple pie filling. Enjoy!

Lemon Bars à la Mode

Lemon bars are a popular dessert choice for seafood-heavy menus. Serve warm lemon bars straight from the oven with dollops of Classic Vanilla Ice Cream for a refreshingly smooth treat. For an even easier (and dairy-free) alternative, scoop up Lemon Sorbet and top with fresh berries.

Snickerdoodle Ice Cream Sandwiches

Here’s an easy treat you can prepare in advance with our Cinnamon Ice Cream and store-bought or fresh-baked snickerdoodles. On a cookie sheet or platter, lay out rows of cookies, top sides down. Place scoops of ice cream onto each cookie and top with the bottom side of a second cookie. Place in the freezer until it’s time for dessert.

Of course, if you really love the taste of cinnamon and sugar cookies, dig into a dish of our Nun Better Snickerdoodle Ice Cream.

Blueberry Parfaits

Blueberry cobbler – made with fresh fruit from the harvest and plated à la mode – is a traditional New England clambake dessert. These easy-to-make parfaits capture that classic flavor with only three ingredients: Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, store-bought or home-baked shortbread cookies and, of course, blueberries. Place the ingredients in parfait cups or tumblers in alternate layers until you reach the top.

Milkshake Cocktails

Drink your dessert! Add a shot of spiced rum to our Pumpkin Pie Milkshake or Cinnamon Apple Milkshake recipes for a creamy autumn cocktail – the perfect night cap after a lovely clambake meal.

Easy Four-Ingredient Cinnamon-Apple Tarts

Cinnamon Apple TartApples – the bounty of the fall harvest – are a staple of seasonal recipes. From pies and dumplings to crisps and cobblers, there are many ways to enjoy apples of all tastes, textures and colors.

That’s why we came up with the idea for these four-ingredient cinnamon-apple tarts. Simple but delicious, this is our go-to recipe when we need a quick dessert. They are very easy to make but look elegant enough to serve at a dinner party. These tempting tarts have about 200 calories and offer a perfect fall-themed dessert.

IngredientsFresh Apples

Remove ice cream from freezer and place on counter to soften.

Dice two medium apples and place in microwave-safe bowl.  Add a bit of water to steam and a few sprinkles of ground cinnamon. Cook two minutes, or until apples are soft.

Beginning of TartPlace one small scoop of cinnamon ice cream in each of the graham crusts, pressing down to make a well. Return crusts to freezer to harden. If planning to prepare crusts ahead of time, cover with plastic wrap to preserve freshness.

Once apples have cooled down a little, remove crusts from freezer and begin to fill. Sprinkle cinnamon on top and serve immediately.

Just for fun, top with whipped cream or caramel sauce!

Cinnamon with ApplesauceLooking for something else to pair with our Cinnamon Ice Cream? Try drizzling warm, homemade applesauce over a scoop. It works great with French Vanilla Ice Cream, too!

How Ice Cream Compares to Other Treats

Hola Fruta Black Cherry LemonLet’s face it: We all want to live healthier. But that doesn’t necessarily mean giving up all of our favorite treats and snacks completely. Moderation is the key. Reading and understanding the nutrition labels of the foods you buy and maintaining portion control are essential to making good choices for you and your family. Have your ice cream – and eat it, too – with these tips for serving sensible portions.

One serving of ice cream is a half cup (4 fl oz). Let’s take a look at the nutritional information for one serving each of two popular flavors:

Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

  • 150 calories
  • 8g total fat
  • 17g total carbohydrates
  • 13g sugars

Chocolate Ice Cream

  • 150 calories
  • 9g total fat
  • 18g total carbohydrates
  • 13g sugars

Let’s see how one serving of our ice cream stacks up against other popular treats. Of course, we’re not saying that one is healthier than the other, but rather, that some treats thought to offer better nutritional value than a serving of ice cream may actually contain more sugar or other ingredients.

Some flavors of Pierre’s ice cream have less sugar than other snack alternatives, and in some cases, fewer calories and less fat. See below for more details.

Ice Cream Versus Blueberry Yogurt

A 4-ounce serving of blueberry yogurt may be lower in calories, but has nearly 30 percent more sugar than a serving of our vanilla bean ice cream! There’s been a lot of talk about the high sugar content of flavored yogurt lately. In fact, The Huffington Post recently reported on 5 yogurt brands that actually contain more sugar than a Twinkie.

Ice Cream Versus Bite-Sized Milk Chocolate Candies

Maybe you’ve tried this diet trick: Eating bite-sized portions of chocolate or some other candy, hoping that the tiny little treats will prevent you from overindulging on larger desserts or snacks. This strategy might satisfy cravings, but it won’t necessarily help with weight management.

One serving – that’s nine small pieces – of popular milk chocolate candies packs 200 calories, 12 grams of total fat, 25 grams of total carbohydrates and 23 grams of sugar.  You can still get your chocolate fix – with Pierre’s Chocolate Ice Cream – while shaving 50 calories, 3 grams of total fat, 7 grams total carbohydrates and 10 grams of sugar off your treat!

Ice Cream Versus Coffeehouse Mocha Blended Beverage

With everyone on the go these days, getting your caffeine through a straw seems like a good idea, but it’s the other ingredients in your favorite coffeehouse drink that add up!

A medium-sized, 16 fl oz mocha blended beverage contains 64 grams of total carbohydrates and 60 grams of sugar! Getting the small size of this drink doesn’t help much: the 12 fl oz serving contains 44 grams of carbohydrates and 41 grams of sugar. You can modify the fat content depending on which milk you ask your barista for, but even the nonfat milk option still has 12 grams of fat in the medium size.

Better yet, try a scoop of Pierre’s better-for-you Cappuccino Yovation® Probiotic Frozen Yogurt.

Ice Cream Versus Granola Yogurt Parfait

This quick fast food granola yogurt parfait does contain some important nurtrients in its one-serving size (that’s slightly larger than a serving of ice cream). But it clocks in at 23 grams of sugar — nearly double the sugar content of one serving of vanilla bean ice cream.

Try making your own parfait; top vanilla bean ice cream with fresh fruit.

Ice Cream Versus Potato Chips

Snacks aren’t always sweet; some of us opt for something salty to munch on instead, from mixed nuts to pretzels to delicious, cruncy potato chips.

You’re definitely avoiding sugar with a serving of these popular potato chips, but are actually consuming more calories and fat than in one serving of vanilla bean or chocolate ice cream!

Ice Cream Versus Granola Bar

Granola bars have become the go-to snacks for everyone from kids after school to people on the go. But, when you unwrap this particular granola bar’s nutritional information, you’ll note that it’s pretty on par with one-serving of ice cream (and actually contains more carbs than ice cream, too).

Portion Control: How to Have Your Ice Cream, and Eat It, Too

Here are some helpful tips to help you enjoy your ice cream by serving sensible portions.

Portion Control Tips

  • Once you scoop up ice cream into serving dishes, place the container back in the freezer. Keeping it on the table might tempt you to over-indulge.
  • Use smaller serving dishes. Remember, one serving of ice cream is one half-cup.
  • Use a half-cup measuring cup to scoop ice cream instead of a spoon or scoop.

Buy individually wrapped ice cream novelties, affordable and perfectly portioned right out of the box.

And remember, not all ice cream is created equal. The above comparisons were made using Pierre’s Premium Ice Cream flavors; the nutritional value of other brands may vary. Also, remember to consult your physician before making any major changes to your diet and/or fitness program.

Try These Better-for-You Ice Cream Options

“Eating better” has many meanings. For those who need to avoid added sugar or dairy or who are watching their cholesterol, Pierre’s has treats just for you.

Reducing your sugar intake? Then try our Slender® No Sugar Added Reduced Fat Ice Cream, sweetened with Splenda® Brand Sweetener.

Counting calories? Wait ‘til you try our Smooth Churned Light Ice Cream, which has 30 percent fewer calories than regular ice cream.

Watching cholesterol, and want something different? Say “hello” to ¡Hola Fruta!® Pure Fruit Sherbet. Naturally low in fat and cholesterol, each pint is made from real fruit purees.

Can’t do lactose? We have a Lactose Free Vanilla Ice Cream and Lactose Free Chocolate Ice Cream just for you!

Need dairy free? Try naturally fat- and cholesterol-free Sorbet. This refreshing alternative comes in fruit flavors, like raspberry, lemon and passion fruit, as well as in chocolate. That’s right – a dairy free way to satisfy your chocolate craving! Or try refreshing ¡Hola Fruta!® Fruit Bars.
